Twice Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur's hopes were dashed as she had to retire from her first-round match against Viktoriya Tomova. The Tunisian player managed to finish only a tight opening set, which went to a tiebreak, before conceding due to discomfort.

Jabeur appeared visibly uneasy in the sweltering heat on Court 14, prompting a lengthy medical timeout during the first set. Currently ranked outside the world's top 50, the 30-year-old former world number two has a history of asthma, which contributed to her struggles in similar conditions at this year's Australian Open.

Wimbledon's opening day expected soaring temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius, prompting the All England Club to activate its warm weather policy to ensure player safety.
