Ons Jabeur, the two-time Wimbledon runner-up, faced another setback in her injury-marred season by retiring from her first-round match on Monday. The Tunisian, trailing Viktoriya Tomova 7-6 (5), 2-0, withdrew after taking a medical timeout. The incident marks yet another challenge in what has been a trying year for the athlete.
The 30-year-old Jabeur received medical attention during the match's first set and was seen tearfully reflecting on her situation while seated on the sidelines. 'I wasn't expecting not to feel good. I have been practicing pretty well the last few days. But I guess these things happen,' Jabeur explained post-match, expressing frustration over her injury woes affecting her confidence and career ambitions.
In her illustrious career, Jabeur reached the finals of Wimbledon in 2022 and 2023, as well as the U.S. Open in 2022. However, injuries, including a persistent shoulder problem and leg issues, have recently overshadowed her tennis journey, curtailing her 2024 season prematurely.
