Owen Farrell Critiques Social Media 'Poison' Impacting Sports
Owen Farrell, former England rugby captain, discusses the negative impact of social media on top-level sports. After leaving international rugby to focus on mental health, he critiques the online environment and emphasizes listening to trusted peers for feedback rather than public discourse.

Owen Farrell, the former England captain, has expressed his confusion and concern over the 'poison' of social media that he believes overshadows professional sports. The 33-year-old walked away from international rugby after the 2023 World Cup to protect his mental wellbeing, later joining Racing 92 and returning to Saracens.
Addressing the media, Farrell noted the rapid spread of information on social platforms, which he feels often gains unwanted momentum. "Things grow legs, take a life of their own, and there's momentum behind them," he said. Farrell stresses the importance of advice from those closely connected to the sport rather than general online discourse.
His comments come in the wake of fellow athletes like England women's footballer Jess Carter also stepping back from social media due to abuse. Farrell highlighted past incidents of online vitriol directed at teammates, such as flanker Tom Curry during the World Cup, reinforcing his call to focus on genuine rugby feedback.
