Chandigarh's Akshay Sharma took the opening day honours with his stunning nine-under 63 at the Chennai Open, a distinguished Rs 1 crore event held at the Cosmo TNGF Golf Course. The 35-year-old claimed a commendable three-stroke lead as the clubhouse leader with a flawless performance characterized by a closing-hole eagle and seven impressive birdies.

Meanwhile, Delhi's Arjun Prasad, currently second on the PGTI Order of Merit, tied for second in the clubhouse at six-under 66 alongside Gurugram's Manu Gandas. The day's play, delayed by rain, eventually began at 8:00 am local time, with a suspension at 6:10 pm due to fading light. Consequently, 24 players are set to complete their first round at 7:00 am Wednesday.

Akshay's round began with a spectacular series of birdies across the first four holes, effectively using irons and wedges. His short-game prowess shone through as he added more birdies until the 14th hole, capped off by a 42-foot eagle on the 18th. Manu Gandas also excelled, registering early birdies, while Arjun Prasad combined seven birdies and a bogey to share the second spot.
