Defending champions Italy confirmed their place in the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals with a decisive 2-0 victory over hosts China. The victory was clinched in Shenzhen after world number eight Jasmine Paolini pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat Wang Xinyu 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Earlier, Elisabetta Cocciaretto showcased resilience, overturning a substantial deficit to edge out Yuan Yue 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, contributing Italy's initial match point. Cocciaretto bounced back from a set down and recovered from being 2-5 and 0-4 in the final set.
Despite trailing 3-5 in the second set, Paolini displayed grit, breaking back and dominating the tiebreak before securing the final set against Wang's challenge. Up next, Italy will face the winners of the upcoming quarter-final between former five-time champions Spain and Ukraine.
