Jose Emilio Santamaria, a legendary defender and an iconic figure for Real Madrid, has died at the age of 96, the renowned Spanish club announced on Wednesday.

Santamaria, who began his journey with Madrid in 1957, secured four European Cups and a total of 337 appearances, etching his name in the annals of football history.

A figure of dual international acclaim, he represented both Uruguay and Spain in World Cups and further extended his influence by coaching Spain's Olympic team and managing Espanyol for seven seasons.
