IIHF Reconsiders Russia's Return: Eligibility on Event-by-Event Basis

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has reversed its blanket ban on Russian teams, choosing instead to evaluate their eligibility for the 2026-27 competitions individually. IIHF Reconsiders Russia's Return: Eligibility on Event-by-Event Basis

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has made a significant shift in its stance regarding the participation of Russian national and club teams in its competitions for the 2026-27 season.

On Friday, the governing body announced that it would no longer impose a blanket ban but instead would evaluate Russia's eligibility on an event-by-event basis. This decision aligns with a recent move to reinstate Belarus in several upcoming tournaments, including the U18 World Men's Championship.

Despite maintaining the ban as of January due to safety and security issues linked to Russia's actions in Ukraine, the IIHF's disciplinary board overturned this decision after an appeal by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. However, Russia's participation will not be automatic and will depend on further assessments.
