Zee Wins FIFA Broadcast Rights: A New Era for Indian Sports TV
Zee Entertainment secures Indian broadcast and streaming rights from 2026 to 2034 for 39 FIFA events, including major World Cups. The partnership, the first between Zee and FIFA, is expected to capitalize on football's growing appeal in India, a market traditionally ruled by cricket.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises has made a landmark acquisition by securing Indian broadcast and streaming rights for 39 FIFA events spanning from 2026 to 2034. The deal, announced on Monday, includes high-profile competitions like the FIFA World Cup 2026, FIFA World Cup 2030, and the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027, among others.
This significant partnership, marking the first ever between Zee and FIFA, will cover a wide array of tournaments, such as the FIFA Men's and Women's U-17 World Cups and FIFA Futsal World Cups, extending through to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in 2030. Zee plans to begin broadcasts on June 11 with the FIFA World Cup 2026 kickoff, utilizing four new sports channels, including Hindi and English broadcasts on Unite8 Sports 1 and Sports 2 HD, as well as on the streaming platform ZEE5.
The strategic deal follows intense negotiations surrounding broadcast rights in India. Previously, FIFA sought $100 million for the 2026 and 2030 events, later lowering the asking price, while JioStar offered $20 million, and Sony withdrew altogether. Though financial terms were not disclosed, Zee's acquisition underscores its effort to tap into football's potential growth within a cricket-centric market.
