Shreyas Iyer Poised to Take Charge as India's New T20 Captain

The BCCI is expected to announce Shreyas Iyer as the new T20 International captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. Despite leading India to a successful World Cup defense, Yadav's underwhelming IPL performance may cost him his position. Iyer returns to the national team following a strong season with Punjab Kings.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is anticipated to hold an Apex Committee meeting on Thursday to declare the appointment of a new T20 International captain for India's senior men's team, insiders reveal.

According to a BCCI source, Suryakumar Yadav might relinquish his leadership role, with Shreyas Iyer from Mumbai likely to assume captaincy duties in the shortest format of the game.

Despite guiding India to defend their ICC T20 World Cup title in 2026, Yadav may also lose his spot in the squad after underperforming for Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2026, scoring just 270 runs, resulting in the team's ninth-place points table finish.

India will embark on their European tour with two T20Is against Ireland and five against England starting June 26. Shreyas Iyer, who last played a T20I in December 2023 against Australia, is set to return to the national team after an impressive stint with Punjab Kings, where he amassed 498 runs.

Potential candidates for the captaincy include aggressive opener Ishan Kishan, middle-order player Tilak Varma, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who captured the IPL 2026 Orange Cap with 776 runs.
