In a significant leap towards homegrown digital infrastructure, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the soft launch of its revolutionary Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service. The inaugural ceremony took place at BSNL’s Ameerpet Exchange in Hyderabad and was presided over by Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman & Managing Director of BSNL/MTNL.
Marking a first in India’s telecom sector, the Quantum 5G FWA is a SIM-less, 100% indigenous solution designed to deliver gigabit-class speeds over 5G radio networks—offering fibre-like connectivity without fibre infrastructure.
A Landmark in Indian Telecom Innovation
Speaking at the launch, Shri Ravi emphasized the achievement as a showcase of Indian innovation:
“Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. It is the first SIM-less, 100% home-grown customised 5G FWA for BSNL. Hyderabad’s tech-savvy ecosystem makes it the perfect launch pad for our next-generation access portfolio.”
This soft launch is part of a phased strategy to refine user experience, with commercial roll-out nationwide planned after incorporating initial feedback.
Key Features of BSNL Quantum 5G FWA
The BSNL Quantum 5G FWA brings several industry-firsts to the Indian market:
-
SIM-less Architecture: Built on BSNL’s Direct-to-Device (D2D) platform, the service removes the need for a physical SIM. Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) devices auto-authenticate over BSNL’s 5G standalone (SA) network.
-
Fully Indigenous Stack: From the core and radio access network (RAN) to the end-user devices, the entire infrastructure is designed and assembled by Indian vendors, aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
-
Ultra-fast Connectivity: Initial tests in Hyderabad's Ameerpet area registered speeds of 980 Mbps download and 140 Mbps upload, with latency under 10 milliseconds—ideal for UHD streaming, cloud gaming, video conferencing, and remote work.
-
Effortless Setup: The plug-and-play self-install gateway covers nearly 85% of Hyderabad households using BSNL’s existing 5G tower infrastructure, eliminating the need for trenching or fiber cable installations.
Expansion and Future Roadmap
BSNL’s 5G ambitions go beyond Hyderabad. The company outlined a clear roadmap to scale the FWA network in multiple Indian cities:
-
Pilot Launches by September 2025 in:
-
Bengaluru
-
Pondicherry
-
Visakhapatnam
-
Pune
-
Gwalior
-
Chandigarh
-
-
Introductory Tariffs:
-
₹999/month for 100 Mbps plan
-
₹1499/month for 300 Mbps plan
-
-
Enterprise Edge-Cloud Capabilities: The same 5G SA core will soon enable network slicing for MSMEs, startups, and smart manufacturing clusters, offering SLA-backed enterprise-grade services with cloud integration.
A Historic First: SIM-less, Home-Grown 5G for India
BSNL becomes the first Indian telecom provider to bring together SIM-less 5G access, indigenous technology, and mass-scale residential connectivity—a milestone for India’s digital sovereignty and infrastructure self-reliance.
Support and Collaboration
The launch was attended by the Board of Directors of BSNL, Chief General Managers from Telangana and BBNW, representatives from academia, industry partners, and officials from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The collaborative effort behind Quantum 5G FWA represents a robust ecosystem of public-sector innovation and private-sector execution.
Strengthening the Digital Backbone of India
As India advances towards universal broadband access, BSNL’s 5G FWA is a cornerstone project in extending high-speed internet to underserved and rural areas. The plug-and-play architecture makes it scalable for remote locations where fibre connectivity is not viable.
This launch reinforces BSNL’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and strengthening India’s national telecom capabilities with cutting-edge, indigenous solutions.
