IIT Hyderabad Drives Forward with India-Specific Autonomous Vehicles

IIT Hyderabad is pioneering India's autonomous vehicle technology with its innovative AI-based concept, developed by the Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation, known as TiHAN. This initiative focuses on producing driverless vehicles adept at navigating the unique challenges of Indian infrastructure.

According to Santhosh Reddy, Hub Executive Officer, the concept has enabled a test vehicle to operate safely on campus, transporting over 10,000 passengers without incident. Despite its success, it remains confined to campus roads, but its potential applications extend to various controlled environments like airports and warehouses. A safety driver is present but does not interfere with the vehicle's operation.

Looking ahead, the team intends to enhance safety features and eliminate the need for a precautionary driver. The technology adapts to different vehicle types, from electric to combustion engines. Future plans include scaling up with industry partners for broader commercial deployment.
