In a bid to comply with European Union regulations, Google has announced it will facilitate easier pathways for app developers to direct customers towards non-Google channels. This marks a significant shift for the tech giant after the EU charged it with violating the new Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The European Commission began scrutinizing Google in early 2024, focusing on practices that potentially limit app developers from offering users alternatives outside the Google Play app store. Concerns were raised over alleged favoring of its own services, such as Google Flights.
Reacting to these allegations and potential hefty fines, Google has decided to revise certain terms under its External Offers Program. EMEA Senior Competition Counsel Clare Kelly expressed concerns about user safety but affirmed ongoing dialogues with the EU to refine policies.
