Kerala Innovates to Tackle Electrocution Hazards with AI

Kerala's Electricity Minister, K Krishnankutty, announced on Wednesday the state government's proactive approach in addressing fatal accidents from snapped live wires using advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI). This comes amid growing concerns over rising electrocution incidents reported by the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has intensified efforts to mitigate risks through comprehensive line patrols and is collaborating with various institutions, including IIT Palakkad, to explore AI applications in preventing electrical mishaps. The initiatives also include specialized checks at schools and hospitals vulnerable to electrical hazards as well as the strategic pruning of trees jeopardizing power lines during extreme weather.

Additionally, the rollout of smart meters and development of new software for early warning signals are key components in the state's strategy to enhance electrical safety. Despite opposition claims, Krishnankutty noted that most incidents occur in domestic settings during tasks involving ladders or sticks. The minister emphasized the high line-land ratio and the prevalence of uprooted trees in monsoon months as contributing factors.
