These sub-models are combined into the overarching AI-VaR framework, which calculates the annual expected loss associated with the deployment of AI systems. This provides organizations with a quantifiable baseline to integrate AI risk into broader corporate governance and financial planning.

The framework draws on the FAIR methodology (Factor Analysis of Information Risk), widely used in information security, to adapt risk quantification to AI-specific contexts. This integration allows for probabilistic modeling that accounts for the uncertainty and complexity of AI-driven systems.

How can organizations apply AI-VaR in practice?

To demonstrate the utility of the model, Enríquez applies AI-VaR through Monte Carlo simulations. These simulations estimate the financial distribution of potential losses under different scenarios. In one example, the model predicts an annual loss expectancy of $55,884, with losses ranging from $30,743 to $87,879 depending on probability weightings.

The use of Monte Carlo techniques allows organizations to visualize not just average losses but also tail risks, extreme but plausible events that can cause disproportionate harm. This approach gives decision-makers a clearer picture of the risk distribution and helps in designing insurance, contingency, and mitigation strategies.
