India's Union Cabinet, led by PM Modi, has approved a major overhaul in vocational education through the National Scheme for ITI Upgradation. It aims to upgrade over a thousand ITIs and establish five National Centres of Excellence, focusing on industry alignment and innovation to meet future skill demands.

In a significant stride towards revolutionizing vocational education in India, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has endorsed the National Scheme for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Upgradation. This initiative also includes the establishment of five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, as stated in an official announcement.
The scheme, part of the Budget 2024-25 and Budget 2025-26, boasts a massive outlay of Rs 60,000 crore. This financing will come from the Central and State Governments, alongside industry contributions, with co-financing from the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank. The focus is on upgrading 1,000 Government ITIs and augmenting the capacity of five National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), keeping the institutes' aspirations aligned with industry standards.
Over five years, the initiative aims to skill 20 lakh youth, addressing industries' demand for a skilled workforce. Emphasizing a need-based investment approach, the scheme will also promote deep industry connections through an industry-led Special Purpose Vehicle, aiming to create a skilled workforce pipeline in high-growth sectors, underscoring India's journey toward becoming a global innovation powerhouse by 2047.
