Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has made a groundbreaking achievement by becoming the world's first renewable energy Independent Power Producer to achieve water positivity across its extensive 14 gigawatt operational portfolio. The company announced this milestone on Thursday, stating that it had reached its water positivity goal a year ahead of the FY26 target, ensuring its place among the top global renewable energy companies.
The certification of water positivity by global assurance leader Intertek underscores AGEL's commitment to eco-friendly practices. Comprehensive audits were conducted across AGEL's 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation sites, leading to recognition as a water-positive company. Notably, AGEL stands as the sole renewable energy company of its scale in India to receive this certification.
AGEL's commitment to sustainability is particularly crucial, considering the challenging environments in which many of its solar and wind plants operate. From the arid landscapes of Khavda, Gujarat, to the barren stretches of the Thar desert, AGEL has transformed these regions into models of sustainable innovation. The company's water conservation efforts equate to around 467 Olympic-sized swimming pools, providing for water-scarce communities.
This significant achievement stems from AGEL's initial ESG goal to make 200 MW of its operations water-positive, a target it surpassed in FY23, and then ambitiously expanded to its entire operational capacity. Utilizing advanced technologies like waterless robotic cleaning and rainwater harvesting, AGEL continues to demonstrate that sustainable energy solutions can coexist with resource conservation.
AGEL's spokesperson emphasized the importance of this milestone in light of India's pressing water security issues. The company's broader environmental credentials include certifications for single-use plastic elimination and zero waste-to-landfill, leading the way in the green energy sector.
