  • United States

On Thursday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will urge Congress to allocate billions of dollars for a major upgrade of the nation's air traffic control system, which is considered outdated by aviation experts. Duffy's plea for funding will emphasize the urgency of replacing old radar and telecommunications equipment.

Though he has previously mentioned an overhaul costing "tens of billions of dollars," Duffy will refrain from giving a precise budget. His initiative is supported by top airline executives, as well as representatives from aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus, highlighting the widespread industry call for modernization.

The meeting will also be attended by relatives of victims from a tragic mid-air collision, underscoring the safety concerns that are driving this push for an updated and more reliable air traffic system.
