Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Tuesday steps aimed at securing the fiscal independence of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Ltd (BCPL), the region's largest petrochemical complex, which currently relies on government support.
Under the administration of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, BCPL began operations in January 2016. The complex produces high-quality polymers distributed throughout the country, with GAIL (India) Limited as its major shareholder and marketer.
The chief minister warned that without a permanent solution, the project might face closure despite ongoing support from central and state governments. Furthermore, electoral schedules for various autonomous councils were discussed, signifying a cautious approach to ensure community-specific voting rights.
