In a decisive move to strengthen the maritime ties between South Korea and the United States, HD Hyundai convened an academic forum on Tuesday, spotlighting cooperative endeavors in the shipbuilding industry. The event, reported by the Korea Herald, aimed to spur collaboration beyond mere talent exchange, focusing on technological and visionary sharing between the two nations.
Executive Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun of HD Hyundai underscored the significance of the partnership, heralding the forum as the inception of a true maritime alliance. Hosted at the company's Global Research and Development Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, the gathering attracted shipbuilding experts and academic leaders from distinguished universities from both countries.
Prompted partly by the recent inauguration of South Korea's new president, Lee Jae Myung, the forum discussed collaborative methods to advance shipbuilding technology and mutual industry support. Esteemed delegates, including Andrew Gately from the U.S. Embassy in Korea and Lee Seung-ryeol from Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, attended the discussions, which continued with a second session at Seoul National University.
The partnership, initiated in 2024, involves HD Hyundai, Seoul National University, and the University of Michigan, aiming to reinvigorate the U.S. shipbuilding industry. By collaborating with American institutions like the University of Michigan and the U.S. Naval Academy, HD Hyundai hopes to cultivate a new generation of skilled shipyard workers in the U.S., contributing to its industry renaissance.
