Crackdown on Illegal Bike Taxis in Maharashtra: A Safety Priority

The Maharashtra transport commissionerate has taken a stern stance against illegal bike taxis, directing RTOs to intensify their crackdown efforts. This move comes on the heels of state minister Pratap Sarnaik's undercover operation, where he exposed their unauthorized operations by hailing a ride from the state secretariat.

The commissioner's office has issued a release urging citizens to avoid such illegal services, emphasizing the importance of safety. The statement also warns of strict repercussions for such operations, especially if citizens contribute tip-offs about unauthorized activities.

In a significant revelation, Sarnaik, operating incognito, booked a Rapido bike taxi ride from Mantralaya to Dadar, catching the operator in the act. The commissioner's office has accused companies like Rapido, Ola, and Uber of circumventing the legal requirement of obtaining permits, contrary to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020.
