The Goa government has put a hold on the issuance of new Rent-a-Cab licenses, addressing escalating safety and traffic issues linked to the surge of self-driven rentals, a minister announced.

This move follows a notification from the Chief Minister's Office highlighting grave road accident cases tied to rented vehicles, as reported by Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho in a State Assembly reply. The problem, largely arising from tourists' rash driving behavior, includes incidents of alcohol-induced driving.

The decision emerged from a State Transport Authority meeting on February 24, 2025, resolving to suspend new licenses to protect public interest, especially with many tourists being unfamiliar with local traffic norms. The state currently holds around 6,762 permits under 10 Rent-a-Cab licenses, while illegal vehicle rentals have also been reported. The suspension is not permanent, as the government plans to periodically review under the new Goa Road Safety Policy 2025, aiming for a balanced approach to tourism and safety.
