A fatal stampede at New Delhi railway station on February 15, caused by a falling headload, claimed 18 lives and injured 15 others, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The incident's findings were shared in the Rajya Sabha, revealing overcrowding as a key factor.
Minister Vaishnaw outlined the details from a high-level committee report, which found that a passenger's headload triggered the chaos on foot overbridge-3. As passengers tripped, a chain reaction on the crowded stairs ensued, leading to tragic consequences.
In response to the incident, the Indian government has rolled out several safety measures, including permanent holding areas, access control measures, and infrastructure enhancements like widening foot overbridges and installing CCTV cameras at key stations.
