India's cooperative sector is preparing to challenge ride-hailing titans Ola and Uber with the introduction of a new taxi service under the brand Bharat, expected to launch by year-end. Backed by an authorized capital of Rs 300 crore, the service has already enrolled 200 drivers across four states.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd registered on June 6, gathers support from eight leading cooperatives, including NCDC, IFFCO, and GCMMF. Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had earlier announced the cooperative taxi service, aiming for a 2025 launch.
Aimed at offering drivers better returns and passengers quality services, the venture is entirely cooperative-funded. A technology partner for the app is soon to be selected, with operations set to expand nationwide through cooperative engagement and a single platform approach.
