The Western Railway is set to introduce Kavach, an indigenous anti-collision system, on Mumbai's local trains, enhancing commuter safety on one of the world's busiest suburban networks by the end of next year, officials confirmed.

Developed under the 'Make in India' initiative, Kavach is being installed on the Delhi-Mumbai route as well. This state-of-the-art Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system automatically controls train speed, preventing collisions that may occur due to human error, and will replace the current Auxiliary Warning System (AWS), officials stated on Sunday.

A significant enhancement over existing systems, Kavach offers automatic brake application during red signal violations and real-time train-station communication. It ensures safer operations by addressing the limitations of AWS, which include inadequate prevention of critical safety incidents, officials added.
