Charging Ahead: India's Ambitious Electric Vehicle Transformation Plan
India aims to boost electric vehicle sales to 30% by 2030, according to a NITI Aayog report. Currently, EVs account for 7.6% of total sales. The plan involves mandates, strategic investments, regulatory reforms, and urban electrification to accelerate EV adoption and establish India as a leader in electric mobility.

In a push to revolutionize India's automotive landscape, a recent NITI Aayog report outlines an ambitious strategy to elevate electric vehicle (EV) sales to 30% by 2030. Today, EVs comprise just 7.6% of nationwide vehicle sales, far below the pre-set target. While the nation leads in electric two- and three-wheelers, the adoption rates for electric buses, cars, and long-haul trucks lag significantly behind, underscoring the urgency for accelerated reforms.
The report chronicles India's journey as EV sales soared from a mere 50,000 units in 2016 to over 2.08 million by 2024. This growth, however, pales when juxtaposed against the global surge from 918,000 to 18.78 million vehicles over the same period. Although advances have been noted in specific vehicle categories such as two-wheelers, India's overall EV progression trails behind international frontrunners like the US, EU, and China.
NITI Aayog advocates for a series of policy shifts, arguing for a shift from incentives to stringent mandates to stimulate Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) adoption. The blueprint for progress includes key initiatives: electrifying urban public transport in five major cities, creating financial mechanisms to lower capital barriers for EV buses and trucks, and constructing robust charging infrastructure along 20 key freight routes. Furthermore, regulatory measures like tighter Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms and disincentives for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles form a core part of the strategy. The report envisions India not just as a consumer of green tech but as a pivotal player in global electric mobility manufacturing and innovation.
