India's automobile retail sector faced a significant hurdle in July 2025, with vehicle registrations dropping by 4.31% compared to the same period last year. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) attributed the decline to a high base effect from July 2024 and unfavorable weather conditions that dampened consumer sentiment and rural transportation.
FADA President C S Vigneshwar remarked that July's downturn resulted from an unusual high demand in July 2024, which was spurred by extreme heat and subsequent rain. The Two-Wheeler segment was hit hardest, suffering a 6.48% decline year-on-year and a 6.28% drop month-on-month, as heavy rains and crop-sowing activities deterred rural consumers.
Passenger Vehicles contracted by 0.81% from the previous year, even as they posted a 10.38% growth compared to June 2025. Commercial Vehicles saw a slight yearly growth of 0.23% with a monthly increase of 4.19%. Tractors outperformed other segments, showing remarkable growth despite obstacles, increasing by 10.96% year-on-year.
Looking forward, FADA anticipates a rebound in August, driven by several festivals that could boost sales momentum. However, industry stakeholders remain wary of risks, such as a new 25% US tariff on Indian exports and the depreciating rupee, that might affect consumer confidence and discretionary spending.
Cumulative retail sales for the April-July FY26 period rose 2.79%, with notable growth in the Three-Wheelers and Passenger Vehicles segments. Overall, while July's slowdown presents challenges, signs point to potential revival as the industry heads into August.
