Authorities have announced road closures on the Shillong-Dawki highway, disrupting access to popular tourist destinations in Meghalaya. The closures, effective from August 20 to August 31, aim to address safety concerns amid construction and monsoon-related challenges. Road closures on a major highway in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district are set to impact tourism, with authorities issuing notices for the Laitlyngkot-Lyngkyrdem stretch on the Shillong-Dawki highway. This move will disrupt tourist visits to key attractions such as Mawlynnong and Dawki.
The closures, a modificaion of prior advisories, will occur daily from noon to 4 pm and from 9 pm to 4 am, effective until August 31. Authorities may reassess the timings post this period, following necessary reviews.
This decision follows safety concerns raised after a tragic accident earlier this month highlighted the need for improved road conditions and safety measures on this under-construction highway section, crucial for the region's tourism sector.
