A massive landslide at Andharkote in Kalinga Ghat has disrupted the crucial highway connecting the districts of Ganjam and Kandhamal in Odisha, officials confirmed Tuesday. The torrential rains leading up to the event caused a 25-meter portion of National Highway 157 to be damaged, halting traffic and stranding numerous vehicles.
Authorities from Kandhamal swiftly visited the site to evaluate the extent of the destruction. G Udayagiri Block Development Officer, Sarat Kumar Mallick, emphasized the severity of the damage, noting the repairs will require several days. Consequently, traffic is being rerouted via Dasapalla in Nayagarh district to facilitate movement between Berhampur and Phulbani.
Superintending Engineer Antanu Sahu remarked, 'Efforts to restore the route are underway and being prioritized; however, given the scale of the landslide and persistent rains, the process will take time.' The affected highway is a key transit path for districts across Odisha and extends connectivity to Andhra Pradesh.
