The Kochi Water Metro has achieved a significant milestone, hitting the 50 lakh passenger mark within just 29 months since it began operations, officials announced on Sunday.
The notable feat was reached on Saturday when an Australia-based Malayali couple, Naina and Amal, purchased tickets from the High Court terminal to Fort Kochi. As a mark of the occasion, Kochi Metro's Managing Director, Loknath Behera, presented a gift to Naina, the 50 lakhth passenger.
Launched on April 25, 2023, the Kochi Water Metro quickly gained popularity among both island residents and tourists. Its success has even attracted interest from other Indian cities and international organizations, with the World Bank expressing willingness to collaborate. The service, now operating 20 boats across 10 terminals, has been recognized with multiple awards for operational excellence.
