Fuel Price Fury: Anjouan Protests Turn Deadly
A deadly clash on Anjouan island, sparked by fuel price hikes, left one dead and five injured. The unrest is linked to a strike by fishermen and has led to widespread disruption. The government cited conflict in the Middle East for fuel price increases, prompting public protests across Comoros.
Unrest has erupted on the Comorian island of Anjouan, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and injuries to five others, amid escalating protests over fuel price increases. The conflict emerged after meetings between local officials and protesting fishermen failed to resolve the standoff.
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Mutsamudu has initiated an investigation following the deadly encounter and subsequent road blockades. The riots began after the government enforced a significant rise in fuel prices, attributing the increase to ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.
In response to the national strike, which started earlier in the week, the Comorian government has pledged to cut official travel expenses and reduce customs duties by 40%. Despite these measures, transport and commerce in Moroni remain paralyzed, and 39 arrests have been recorded.
