Jute Crisis Looms in West Bengal: Mills on the Brink
West Bengal's jute mills face a severe crisis due to raw material shortages and soaring prices. Industry leaders urge the new BJP government for intervention to prevent closures and job losses. They call for stock release, emergency imports, and price stabilization as thousands of workers face unemployment.
West Bengal's jute industry is grappling with a severe raw material shortage and escalating costs, putting numerous mills at risk of closure. Industry representatives have called on the newly elected BJP government to intervene, hoping to ward off widespread job losses across the state's industrial belts.
Fourteen mills have already suspended operations or significantly reduced production due to unavailability of raw jute and unsustainable costs, according to the Indian Jute Mills Association. Mills have been hit hard by the freeze on trade and delayed crop arrivals, with 75,000 workers facing unemployment.
The industry is urging immediate governmental action to release stocks, permit emergency imports, and stabilize prices to keep these mills operational. The jute sector is eagerly watching the new administration's response, seeking policy stability and support for their traditional industry.
