Temu Faces Massive EU Fine Over Consumer Safety Violations

The European Union has slapped a hefty 200 million euro (USD 232 million) fine on Chinese e-commerce company Temu. The penalty comes after EU regulators discovered the company did not do enough to shield consumers from illegal products listed on its platform.

This fine is part of the EU's Digital Services Act, which compels online platforms to safeguard users against harmful content and products. Temu, popular for its affordable goods sourced from China, has 92 million users in the EU. It must now submit an 'action plan' by the end of August to rectify these issues, or face additional penalties.

The European Commission criticized Temu for failing to properly assess risks associated with illegal products, calling their efforts inadequate. "Temu's risk assessment lacks specificity and solid evidence," commented Henna Virkunnen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission. The company has been urged to comply with legal standards to protect European consumers.
