Sweden's Gripen Jets: A Game-Changer for Ukraine's Air Defense
Ukraine plans to acquire 20 new Gripen fighter jets while Sweden will donate 16 older models. The deal is part of Ukraine's defense strategy, supported by a 90 billion euro EU loan. Deliveries of newer models arrive in 2030, marking a pivotal upgrade in Ukraine’s air capabilities.
Ukraine will bolster its air defense capabilities by purchasing 20 new Gripen fighter jets and receiving 16 older models from Sweden next year, as announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a joint press conference.
Initially outlined in a letter of intent last year, the agreement enables Ukraine to acquire up to 150 Saab Gripen model E jets. Although deliveries of these newer jets won't begin for several years, the transaction marks a vital progression in Ukraine's fighter fleet enhancement strategy, supported by a 90 billion euro EU loan.
The deal positions Gripen jets as a cost-effective alternative to the American F-35, emphasizing their efficiency and versatility. Meanwhile, Sweden leverages this agreement to strengthen its defense industry amidst growing demand fueled by Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
