India Ascends to 5th Place in Global Digitalization: A New Digital Powerhouse

India has emerged as a formidable force in the global digital landscape, climbing to 5th place on the 2026 CHIPS-Combined index, as highlighted in the latest State of India Digital Economy (SIDE) report. Despite having a lower per capita income, India competes with developed economies through dynamic population scale and unrivaled digital services exportation.

The SIDE report details India's impressive digital growth, noting its surge from 8th to 5th place, with significant contributions from connectivity and the widespread application of digital technologies. India stands as the fourth largest digital services exporter, generating USD 328 billion in trade while dominating AI talent pools globally.

The report, however, underscores critical hurdles. India's innovation lags behind leading countries in advanced sectors like robotics and private AI investment. Moreover, rising cyber threats and substantial e-waste generation press for urgent action to enhance India's cybersecurity and sustainable practices as it navigates its digital future with strategic international collaborations.
