In a bid to enhance India's educational infrastructure, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned a substantial expansion plan for five newly established Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) located in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Karnataka. The scheduled expansion, valued at Rs 11,828.79 crore, is set to unfold over the course of four years, from 2025-26 to 2028-29.

Part of this ambitious endeavor involves the creation of 130 faculty positions at the professor level and aims to amplify the synergy between academia and industry with state-of-the-art research parks. The comprehensive plan will see the student strength surging by more than 6,500, thereby accommodating an increased student population of 13,687, up from the current 7,111 across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs.

The expansion not only promises educational growth but also economic benefits, with the potential to bolster local economies through increased demand for housing, transportation, and services. The decision aligns with the goals set forth in the Union Budget for 2025-26 and seeks to advance India's global standing by fostering a skilled workforce, driving innovation, and promoting social mobility.
