The Illinois Institute of Technology is breaking new ground as the first US university to receive approval from the University Grants Commission to set up a campus in India, according to officials. The Mumbai campus is slated to open in the fall of 2026, offering undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science, engineering, and business.
Raj Echambadi, president of Illinois Tech, emphasized the strategic significance of the new campus. 'Illinois Tech aims to democratize access to technology and innovation, empowering the youth of India to become global leaders,' Echambadi stated. The Mumbai campus will mirror the academically rigorous and experiential curriculum offered at the Chicago campuses, complete with Illinois' esteemed Elevate program.
Mallik Sundharam, vice president for enrollment management at Illinois Tech, highlighted the importance of this expansion in response to rising student interest. Over the past five years, US foreign direct investment in India has escalated dramatically, paralleled by a significant increase in Indian graduate students at Illinois Tech. The new campus will deliver internationally recognized degrees in a locally contextualized format.
