IIT Kharagpur Takes Legal Steps After Tragic Student Deaths

IIT Kharagpur is set to file a formal FIR with the local police after the tragic death of Md Asif Qamar, a civil engineering student, on May 4. The institution's move follows calls for thorough investigations prompted by multiple student suicides on campus.

Acting Director Amit Patra has confirmed that while local police were initially informed about Qamar's death, an official FIR will be lodged shortly, in compliance with legal procedures. This decision coincides with the Supreme Court's inquiries into this and similar cases, necessitating actionable measures.

A dedicated committee is being formed by the institute to probe the circumstances of the recent suicides. The increasing number of such incidents, including three student suicides since January, has spurred heightened scrutiny and a search for effective prevention strategies.
