Suman Chakraborty, a distinguished figure in the field of engineering, has been appointed as the director of IIT Kharagpur, according to an official announcement on Friday night.

Chakraborty succeeds Professor Amit Patra as he steps into the role for a five-year tenure, effective from the date he assumes office, or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.

Renowned for his pioneering work, Chakraborty's accolades include the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences. His contributions are instrumental in advancing diagnostic technologies and improving healthcare for marginalized communities, earning him a spot among Asia's top 100 researchers in 2023.
