Guwahati Welcomes India's 22nd IIM: A Boost for Education and Economy

In a significant move for Indian education, the government is setting up its 22nd Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati with an investment of Rs 555 crore. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the new institution will start admitting students in the current academic year.

The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which facilitates this establishment, was passed by the Rajya Sabha following approval from the Lok Sabha. This initiative marks the ninth IIM developed since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, indicating an increased focus on educational development.

Minister Pradhan highlighted the role of IIM-Guwahati in positioning India as a major economic force. The establishment is part of a broader plan to expand educational infrastructure and includes granting foreign universities permission to establish campuses in India. It is hoped that students from the Northeast will benefit from improved access to quality education.
