A spate of tragic incidents has rocked the Chandrapur district in eastern Maharashtra, where five women have lost their lives to tiger attacks in just three days. The most recent victim was 30-year-old Bhuvaneshwari Bhendre, killed on Monday morning in the Mul range, located within the buffer zone of the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR).
The victim was collecting tendu leaves, essential for bidi production, when she was unexpectedly attacked. The incident has drawn attention to the area's reliance on tendu leaf collection, a major income source despite the inherent risks posed by wildlife like the tiger.
This series of attacks underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and compensation for affected families. Authorities have begun necessary formalities to provide initial and final compensation to the grieving families while emphasizing safety in wild habitat zones.
