Supreme Court Clears Path for 'Thug Life' Release Amid Controversy

The Supreme Court has instructed the Karnataka government to ensure the release of the Kamal Haasan starrer 'Thug Life,' amid protests in the state. The court emphasized that artistic expressions like movies and stand-up comedy cannot be halted merely because someone's sentiments are hurt.

A bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan questioned the trend of obstructing creative works due to emotional responses and highlighted the state's responsibility to provide security for the film's screening. Karnataka assured it will act against those impeding the release.

The controversy arose after Haasan's remark suggesting Kannada's origins from Tamil sparked backlash. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce requested an apology, which Haasan declined. Despite financial losses, the film producers agreed to proceed with the release under state security guarantees.
