Clash in Jharkhand Marks Hul Diwas Celebration Amidst Protests

Tensions ran high in Bhognadih, Jharkhand, on Monday as police intervened with mild lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse a group of protesting villagers. The protests occurred on the occasion of Hul Diwas, a day marking the historic Santhal rebellion, after administrative authorities dismantled a separate stage set up by the protesters for their commemorative activities.

Led by the Sido-Kanhu Murmu Hul Foundation and Aato Manjhi Vashi Bhognadih, the villagers opposed the district administration's actions, resulting in minor clashes. Police resorted to using minimum force as some demonstrators attacked with bows and arrows, stated an official, emphasizing that the situation was swiftly brought under control and government celebrations proceeded smoothly.

Despite the unrest, dignitaries, including Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren, paid their respects to the leaders of the 1855 Santhal rebellion, urging remembrance of their struggle against British colonial oppression. The events underscore ongoing tensions in preserving tribal identity and history while observing the pivotal uprising that originated in Bhognadih.
