Meghalaya Mandates Guides for Tourists to Boost Safety

In a bid to enhance tourist safety, Meghalaya has mandated that visitors hire guides for outdoor activities in the East Khasi Hills district, officials announced Monday.

This decision follows a month after the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, orchestrated by his wife during their honeymoon in the Sohra region.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta M Kurbah stated that employing registered tourist guides is now mandatory for treks and other outdoor activities, citing safety concerns highlighted by the recent murder case.

Kurbah, who also chairs the District Tourism Promotion Society, noted that guide services will enhance safety, preventing tourists from getting lost, injured, or falling victim to crimes.

With the shocking Raghuvanshi murder leading to the arrest of eight individuals from Indore, tourism officials stressed strict adherence to the order, warning of penalties for violators.

Plans are underway to increase the number of trained guides and collaborate with local communities to ensure effective implementation.

Known for its trekking spots, including the double-decker living root bridge and picturesque waterfalls, East Khasi Hills is a major tourist draw.

The tourism department stresses the importance of security measures to uphold the area's image as a tranquil tourist haven.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh anticipates a substantial influx of around two million visitors this year, supported by initiatives like the Cherry Blossom Festival featuring international performers in the state capital.
