Swiss prosecutors have filed an indictment against Zurich city councilor Sanija Ameti for shooting at an auction poster depicting a 14th-century Madonna and child painting. The incident stirred controversy and led Ameti to resign from her leadership position within the Green-Liberal party, now serving as an independent.
The indictment, made public by the activist group Mass Voll, accuses Ameti of "disturbing religious freedom" and proposes a fine of 12,500 Swiss francs. According to Swiss criminal law, those who insult or mock religious beliefs or desecrate religious objects can face financial penalties.
Ameti had apologized for her actions and removed the social media images. She reportedly faced threats, which prompted her to seek police protection. Explaining her actions, Ameti claimed the poster was large enough for target practice. The poster advertised Tommaso del Mazza's "Madonna with Child and the Archangel Michael."
