Amidst heavy rains, the Dahi Handi festival in Mumbai turned into a spectacle of celebration and political maneuvering. Troupes of 'govindas' competed in human pyramids to break the butter-filled pots, a traditional celebration of Krishna Janmashtami.
The festivities, however, were marred by tragedy as a participant lost his life and 75 others sustained injuries. Politicians seized the opportunity to connect with the youth, organizing events with attractive cash prizes, positioning the festival as a platform ahead of upcoming local body elections. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis used the occasion to assure victory over his political adversaries.
The festival, now recognized as an adventure sport, also saw what was claimed to be a world-record-breaking 10-layer pyramid. Insurance coverage for participants underlines the festival's adventurous nature. In a striking moment of tribute, the festival was dedicated to the bravery of security personnel involved in Operation Sindoor.
