The Indian government has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at modernizing the country's public library system. Under the Ministry of Culture, the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF) will compile and maintain a national-level dynamic database of public libraries. This effort signals a renewed focus on enhancing public access to library resources across India.
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed Parliament about these developments. The RRRLF, an autonomous body, already aids the development of libraries through financial assistance programs in collaboration with state and Union Territory authorities. The latest database initiative seeks to better integrate and optimize library resources nationwide.
In another discussion, the Anthropological Survey of India aims to align its research efforts with national policies, focusing on socio-economic development and cultural heritage preservation. Parliament also scrutinized illegal encroachment issues at heritage sites like the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, prompting governmental actions addressing the violations.
