The first consignment of hilsa fish, a widely cherished delicacy, has arrived at the India-Bangladesh border, marking a significant prelude to the Durga Puja festivities. Eight trucks carried approximately 32 tonnes of fish from Bangladesh, as part of a larger export agreement of 1,200 tonnes during this festive season.

The shipment, running from September 16 to October 5, is a result of a recent export approval by Bangladesh, with each truck transporting around four tonnes of hilsa sourced from the sacred Padma river. Upon arrival, these fish are set to flood Kolkata's wholesale markets, according to Syed Anwar Maqsood, Secretary of the Fish Importers' Association.

While the export complies with Bangladesh's Export Policy 2024-27, which mandates a minimum price of USD 12.5 per kg, consumers in Kolkata will shell out approximately Rs 1,800 for a kilo of the prized 'Padma Hilsa'. This venture not only satisfies demand but also reinforces cultural and economic ties between the neighboring nations.
