The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea challenging the Karnataka government's decision to invite International Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate this year's Mysuru Dasara festival.

A bench led by Chief Justice B R Gavai acknowledged the urgency, with the festival set to commence on September 22. Opponents argue that the involvement of a non-Hindu in Hindu religious ceremonies at Chamundeshwari Temple runs afoul of traditional practices.

Despite earlier dismissals by the Karnataka High Court, which found no legal or constitutional violations, the appeal contends that the rituals are an essential religious practice protected under Article 25 of the Constitution, and must be performed by a Hindu.
