Renowned classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, who was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, passed away early Thursday at the age of 89. He succumbed to a prolonged illness in Mirzapur, where he had been residing with his youngest daughter's family. According to his family, Mishra's health had deteriorated late Wednesday night, leading to his hospital admission, before he passed away early morning.
Born in Azamgarh in 1936, Mishra emerged as a prominent figure in Hindustani classical music, significantly contributing to Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, and Bhajan styles. He received tutelage from his father, Badri Prasad Mishra, along with guidance from Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of Kirana gharana and Thakur Jaidev Singh.
His mastery of the Banaras gharana and the Purab Ang tradition of Thumri earned him accolades, including the 2020 Padma Vibhushan and the 2010 Padma Bhushan. His last rites will take place in Varanasi at 5 pm. Mishra is survived by his son, Ramkumar Mishra, a tabla player, and two daughters. His wife predeceased him four years ago.
