In a bid to correct historical oversight, former Rajya Sabha MP Tarlochan Singh has approached the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to recognize Baba Ram Singh, leader of the Namdhari sect, as the pioneer of the Swadeshi Movement in 1860.
Baba Ram Singh, the 12th Guru of the Namdhari sect of Sikhism, initiated the Kuka Movement in 1857, challenging British rule through advocacy for indigenous products and social reforms such as vegetarianism and widow remarriage. His efforts were a cornerstone of early Indian resistance.
Singh's letter points out that NCERT's recent modules mistakenly attribute the Swadeshi Movement's origins to Kolkata in 1905. He requests rectification to honor Baba Ram Singh's contributions. The Ministry of Culture acknowledges his impact, planning celebrations for his bicentenary, marked by a commemorative stamp and coin.
